Pala – The Cultural Folk Ballad Form Of Odisha

Overview

“PALA” – Reviving a Fading Folk Ballad of Odisha on an International Stage Pala, one of the most powerful and expressive folk ballad traditions of Odisha, is slowly fading away and is on the verge of being forgotten by the next generation. Rooted in devotion, storytelling, music, and philosophy, this traditional art form carries the spiritual and cultural essence of our land. With the interest and wholehearted cooperation of the Odia Samaj Association of Nigeria (OSAN), we successfully staged a Pala performance during the Cultural Program of our AGM-21 held on 20th March 2022 in Lagos, Nigeria. What makes this achievement truly special is that none of the participants had any professional background in Pala. It was simply a vision — a small yet determined thought by Director Rosalin Das: “We will do something different.” That single thought transformed into a grand and successful Pala presentation, which was highly appreciated by the audience present at the event. This was the first-ever Pala performance outside India, marking a historic milestone for this traditional Odia art form. We feel immensely blessed and proud to have taken Pala to an international platform and showcased our rich cultural heritage beyond borders. We offer our heartfelt gratitude to Lord Jagannatha for giving us the strength, courage, and divine blessings to accomplish this noble effort. As OSAN, we remain committed to reviving and promoting our forgotten and endangered traditional cultural forms on global platforms. This is just the beginning. We request everyone to kindly find time to watch and experience this beautiful art form. Please share it widely so others can witness this cultural revival, and do not forget to leave your valuable comments and encouragement. Jai Shree Jagannatha! Bande Utkala Janani!
